Context
The design and build approach prioritised reduction, clarity and structural consistency. Every interface decision was evaluated against the question of whether it supported the work or distracted from it. The resulting site uses a simple visual language, neutral typography and a limited colour palette, creating a quiet framework in which the artwork and accompanying texts are given space to breathe.
A key challenge was accommodating extensive bilingual contextual writing without resorting to overlays or pop-up interfaces, which the artist explicitly wished to avoid. This was resolved through a vertically scrolling page structure in which imagery sits on one side of the layout and text on the other. French and English translations are distinguished through subtle variations in dark grey tones, allowing both languages to coexist clearly without visual competition.
The site was built using a content management system to support a large and evolving catalogue of work. While the overall structure remains consistent, the system allows for significant variation in content types, including still images, video, text-heavy projects and projects with minimal contextual material.
Momentary Movements of Landscapes is Juha Mäki-Patola’s third solo album and his debut on FatCat’s 130701 imprint. Across twelve intricately layered pieces, he crafts meditative soundscapes of piano and Prophet 10 loops, processed through tape echo and reverb to create drifting textures and light drones. Recorded during the dark Nordic winter of 2024–2025, the album draws on memory, imagination, and a deep connection to Finnish nature—evoking forests, shorelines, and dreamlike states. Improvised live in his Helsinki studio and later enriched with subtle overdubs, the pieces feature contributions from Jessica Hébert, Tapani Rinne, Julia Gjertsen, and his daughter Frida, on violin, bass clarinet, and voice. Mäki-Patola’s looping, tape-processed approach nods to artists like William Basinski and Ian William Craig, producing music that is organic, reflective, and timeless. Momentary Movements of Landscapes offers an immersive sonic refuge—a gentle suspension of time in which to pause, drift, and reconnect with the elemental.
Design Overview
The artwork for Momentary Movements of Landscapes reflects the serene, elemental world that inspires Mäki-Patola’s music. Traveling to his native Finland, seeking out the quiet beauty that permeates the record, the photograph captures a still and glassy section of coastline edged by dark forest, moments before the sun rose. Stripped of movement and distraction, the image mirrors the album’s meditative pace and its invitation to linger in a moment of suspended calm—serene yet intimate—evoking the meditative drift and elemental connection that flow through Mäki-Patola’s music.
